When Hyundai debuted the eighth-generation Sonata for the 2020 model year, the automotive industry took notice. For most cars, a new generation typically entails an extensive redesign. But the 2020 Sonata was completely overhauled; the company's longest-standing, and most successful model was unlike any of its predecessors.

In addition to showcasing Hyundai's new Sensuous Sportiness design philosophy, the 2020 Sonata introduced two new highly efficient and responsive Smartstream gasoline powertrains: a 2.5-liter GDI (191 horsepower, 181 pound-feet of torque) and a 1.6-liter T-GDI (185 horsepower, 195 pound-feet of torque), both paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The 2020 Sonata ushered in innovative new technologies like a 10.25-inch touchscreen with split-screen capability, navigation, and junction view lane guidance, and Digital Key, which allows you to unlock and drive your Sonata without a physical key by using your smartphone. And with the first-in-class Remote Smart Parking Assist, drivers can step out of the car and use their Smart Key to enter or exit a tight parking space. Finally, 2020 saw the first Sonata with standard SmartSense driver aids like Collision-Avoidance with Pedestrian Detection, Lane-Keeping and Lane Following Assist, Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go, and Driver Attention Warning.

What's New for 2021?

So after all those enhancements, what's on tap for the 2021 Hyundai Sonata?? Well, it's mostly a carryover model, but there are few notable changes, including available 19-inch wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero all-season tires and a 6-way power-adjustable passenger's seat for the Limited trim. SEL, SEL Plus, and Limited models now come with Safe Exit Warning that warns passengers of oncoming traffic when attempting to exit on to the street.

However, the 2021 Sonata's biggest upgrade is Hyundai's sporty N Line addition, which features a unique exterior aesthetic, handling upgrades, and a robust 290-horsepower turbocharged 2.5-liter engine. Lansing and Owosso drivers will have to wait a bit though. The Sonata N Line will debut Summer 2021.
